So I got to thinking, since the Turk uses the small barrel thread, can I just simply order a barrel for a Sweedish 96? I realize I may have to face off the reciever to eliminate the ring the Turks left there for the upper portion of the stock and that does not particularly offend me either. Of course, this will also be a LOT heavier than the average hunting rifle as well, which should help with recoil. This will be a range gun not a hunting rifle so a heavy recoil gun can get unshootable REAL fast at the range. 308 is it's a little easier to shoot all day. The only thing I had considered good about. 1, it's very close to what the original 8mm is, and 2, apparently CMP has VERY good prices on surplus Greek ammo, at least for the forseeable future. In the meantime, I have a very prolific $119 rifle that is just screaming to be modified!!! The original stock and barrel will get tucked away safely should I ever decide to relinquish it to wallhanger status. The beautiful thing is none of the modifications I plan for this rifle are irreversable. Typical of the finish quality I would expect from a mid-war production rifle. The stock is still even somewhat rough feeling as it has not been handled. Some small handling marks here and there but no battle scars, no wear on the bluing, and still has some cosmoline tucked into the corners. The shop had two identical rifles and both were 100% immaculate. 30-06 barrel would be appreciated! I'm not looking to make this thing into a match grade benchrest rifle, so good enough is plenty fine quality for me.ībemory, I'm pretty sure this rifle was never fired. Any suggestions on an affordable small-ring. Sadly the particular barrel I was looking at only fits the large ring recievers. 30-06 since it is commonly available and much cheaper on the surplus market. I think my best bet may be to just rebarrel in.

I searched around today for 8mm Mauser and it seems few if any local shops stock it, and the ones that did only had premium hunting ammunition at nearly $1.75/round. Thank you all for the replies, particularly one about the rebarreling. As for the bolt I will probably just make my own lever to clear whatever scope I wind up buying rather than buy the ATI retrofit so that I am not worried about.Īny help on this is greatly appreciated!!! I would rather a standard scope than a long eye relief type that would mount in the rear sight position. I'm particularly interested in the stock and a set of Weaver style scope mounts. As best I can figure is the Turk (of 1943 vintage) is based on the 98 Mauser, so am I correct to assume that most 98 parts should fit? There is no shortage of parts available for the various German and Sweedish variations, but little listed for the Turk. Not much information seems to exist on the Turkish M38. My plan is to semi-sporterize it with a Monte Carlo style stock and some type of scope. So I march it home and disassemble it to remove what's left of the now 65 year old cosmoline and begin my online search for "upgrades".

How could i say no? It's big, it's clean, it's historical, and it goes bang really, really loud. So I found a Turkish Mauser, which is # matching and appears to be unfired, for the less than princely sum of $119. My plan was to find a decent 1903, or if none were available, a Mauser. So I grabbed a cup of coffee and set out to the local 2nd Ammendment fitness centers to exercise my rights. Ok, so I woke up today and said to myself, "Self, you need to get a new gun today."
